I have considered Starcraft several times, but then I always remember I do not like those games. (As in, make buildings only to create troops and fight, not even a basic level of society like Age of Empires even)

Until recently.
Media will have you believe otherwise, but historically speaking, we are in one of the most peaceful times ever, since the end of the Cold War.
Sure, there are wars, but they are pretty localized, back in the old days there were two european nations fighting at any moment.
China being invaded, crusades and whatnot.
We are doing pretty fine, it just looks worse because we now hear of disasters half the world away, something we did not until recently.
