A week ago it was reported on our beta test that the game didn't work on some PCs and a little digging gave me the reason - about 20% of gaming PCs do not support pixel shaders - they either have DX7 era graphics cards or simple integrated on board chipsets.

Now while Light of Altair makes the most of Pixel Shader 2.0 and DirectX9c effects, I though it would be a shame to rule out a whole class of PCs, so I have spent the last couple of days writing a compatibility mode without any shaders.

Happily all the GUI and starscape get through unchanged, and the buildings and planets - while flatter still retain a lot of the detail painted into their colour textures.

Another bonus, for those with shader-ready cards but old PCs is that the non shader version gives a nice FPS boost.
